    19. In order for the balloon to rise, the buoyant force on the balloon must be greater than the “weight” of the balloon. The weight of the balloon is equal to its total mass multiplied by the acceleration due to gravity. The buoyant force on the balloon is equal to the “weight” of the displaced air that the balloon takes up, which is the air’s mass times the acceleration due to gravity. To get the mass, you would take the volume of the displaced air and multiply it by the density of air at the temperature. As the balloon heats up, the pressure inside remains constant and the volume increases. The density of the air inside the balloon decreases so essentially, the mass of the balloon decreases, allowing the buoyant force to lift the balloon.
